The University of Idaho chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) will host a panel titled “Women in Sports Media,” 4 p.m. Thursday in Admin 317.
The panel, which will host female media professionals in sports journalism, will cover topics related to challenges women face in sports media. The event is free and open to the public.
The panel will consist of women who have worked in sports media for varying years of experience, SPJ President Tess Fox said. Panelists will include UI Lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Media, Julie Scott, Assistant Director for Washington State University Athletic Communications, Jessica Holmes, and The Spokesman Review sports reporter Whitney Ogden.
“More women are joining media institution than before and it’s important to have these conversations about women’s unfair treatment and how to stop it,” said Rosemary Anderson, event coordinator for SPJ.
While women in sports media might not be a strange sight, they still face sexism. Attendees can learn how these women deal with discrimination and some professional tools for dealing with this problem, Fox said.
Anderson said media consumers can learn from the panel to better understand what women face in the media. This is an event for women who want to go into the field, because they can learn about obstacles they might face, Anderson said.
