Idaho women’s tennis standout junior Marianna Petrei added to her resume of success over the weekend with the singles title from the ITA Mountain Regional Championship on Sunday.
The back-to-back Big Sky MVP put together a string of four wins to finish off the weekend with a perfect 6-0 record. Petrei, ranked 71st in the country, defeated Anastasia Abramyan of BYU and En-Pei Haung of UNLV in the semifinals. Petrei took down No. 87 Bianca Mok of Denver 6-3 and 6-4 to get to the finals.
There she faced off with Linda Hung of Colorado. The contest was close, but Petrei found a way to come out on top 7-5. Petrei finished the competition with a 6-4 win.
Petrie and her doubles partner senior Lucia Badillos also made a run at the title that ended in the final match. The duo grabbed three wins and found their way to the championship round.
Petrei and Badillos defeated Montana and fellow Big Sky opponent NAU’s Eirene Granville and Brandy Walker 8-7(3).
Denver made repeated appearances in the tournament for the Vandals. Petrei and Badillos played back-to-back matches against Denver teams before Petrei once again faced off against Mok of Denver, but this time with her partner Julia O’Loughlin in the doubles final. Mok and O’Loughlin took the match 6-3, 6-3.
After her wins over the weekend, Petrei qualifies for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships beginning Nov. 1.
