Golf: Finishing Strong

Men’s Golf

Idaho men’s golf climbed up the ranks after the two-day Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational Tuesday. The Vandals are now ranked No. 15.

“I was pleased with our progression this week,” Idaho head coach David Nuhn said. “This was a long course suits our strengths as a team a bit better. Our players are long-ball hitters. At 7,700 yards, this is probably the longest course we’ve ever seen as a team.”

Junior Enrique Martin finished in a tie for 14th individually at 4-under.

Martin was at or under par in each of the last seven rounds leading the score boards. This is the best scores he’s posted in his career.

Martin was named Big Sky Conference Men’s Golfer of the week Wednesday for his performance in Colorado.

“Enrique has really worked on his game and it’s paying dividends,” Nuhn said. “I’m very proud of another great performance from him. He is so steady and just takes what the golf course gives him. He does a great job of getting it around and making shots when he has the opportunity.”

Idaho will play in the Southern Dunes Invitational starting on Oct. 14 in Phoenix Arizona.

Women’s Golf

Junior Michelle Kim finished in the top ten for the second week in a row at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational earlier in the week. “We played well,” said Idaho head coach Lisa Johnson. “We didn’t get off to a very good start but we played the last 12 holes significantly better. We didn’t let our poor start affect us emotionally. We played the course one stroke at a time. I was very proud of the team for that. We left the course feeling like we had a very good week.”

The Vandals finished eighth Wednesday afternoon, shooting eight over 292 – only two strokes behind the Washington State Cougars.

In the final three holes, Kim got two birdies. She shot an even-par 71 tied for sixth place. This is Kim’s best career score and the first time she finished under par since her debut in 2015. This is also her 10th finish in the top 10.

Freshman Valeria Patino had a round start to the game, bogeying on three of the first four holes on the match. However, she came back and shot 74 Wednesday to the week at 3-over 216.

Idaho will play in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational beginning Oct. 10 at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington hosted by Washington Huskies.
