The International Film Series will finish 2017 with a bang, presenting a different independent, foreign film for each remaining month of 2017 at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre.
“I think that international films are very important because they open the world to new experiences and stories which is exactly what we need in Moscow,” said Jamie Hill, Kenworthy operations director.
According to the Kenworthy’s webpage on Toni Erdmann, “The International Film Series fulfills part of our goals and strategies by encouraging film and other performing arts that would not otherwise be available in the area.”
Hill said she is most looking forward to “Toni Erdmann,” the next film in the series, which will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19. Like most of the International Film Series showings, “Toni Erdmann” tickets will cost $5 per person.
“Toni Erdmann” is an R-rated German-Austrian comedy in which Ines Conradi, the protagonist played by Sandra Huller in the film, has to spend time with her estranged father, played by Peter Simonischek, during a surprise visit. The film was written and co-produced by German director and writer Maren Ade, The film was first released in theaters Dec. 25, 2016.
All the films in the International Film Series were in either the 2016 or 2017 Cannes Film Festival. The festival is invitation only, and films are generally selected based on their artistic quality. This also means that the directors and producers utilized their artistic freedom, and most of the films selected for the International Film Series are also rated R for various reasons.
Upcoming films, after “Toni Erdmann” are “Elle,” playing at 7 p.m. Oct. 17; “City of Ghosts,” playing at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 and “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki,” which will play in December, with the time and day to be determined.
