Genesee man to undergo further psychological evaluation
A Genesee man charged with aggravated battery with an enhancement for great bodily harm must now undergo further psychological evaluation before an official trial date can be set.
The man, Eliseo DeLeon Tye, 24, appeared Monday in Latah County 2nd District Court for a status hearing, when public defender Catherine Mabbutt informed the court that additional time was needed for Dr. Mark Yama to conduct his psychological review of the defendant. Mabbutt said Yama required at least three more weeks.
Judge John Stegner authorized a continuance and scheduled a second status conference for 10 a.m. Aug. 29.
DeLeon Tye was originally charged April 7 with attempted first-degree murder and burglary with the intent to commit a felony after he allegedly stabbed his ex-wife, Shelby Smith, 23, 14 times in her Moscow apartment.
According to police reports, DeLeon Tye allegedly said he entered Smith’s because he believed she was in possession of a thumb drive that he had lost at some point during their divorce, and he needed retrieve it for a man named Gemini or his sister’s life would be in danger.
The Latah County Prosecutor’s Office lowered its initial attempted murder charge during DeLeon Tye’s preliminary hearing so he could also be charged with two sentencing enhancements.
If convicted, DeLeon Tye faces up to 45 years in the Idaho State Penitentiary, plus the possibility of five more years for the use of a deadly weapon and a fine of over $100,000.
He will remain in the custody of the Latah County Jail.
Moscow man accused of sexually exploiting children over the internet
The Moscow Police Department arrested a 51-year-old man Wednesday morning after they received a tip from police in Seattle and Mesa, Ariz., that he had allegedly asked several juveniles to engage in sexual acts.
Jeffrey E. Hannon was booked into the Latah County Jail for suspicion of two counts of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of enticing a child via the internet.
According to a news release, MPD worked in conjunction with the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the U.S. Marshall’s Service, the FBI, the Pullman Police Department and the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office before arresting Hannon.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. July 27, and he will remain in the jail’s custody on a $100,000 bond.
Fall orientation Aug. 17-20
The University of Idaho will host a New Student Orientation for incoming first-year students Aug. 17-20.
The three-day session is designed to prepare new Vandals for the upcoming semester and their overall colligate experience.
It will begin Thursday with Residence Hall Move-in, Convocation and the New Vandal Scramble. Orientation programming and events will continue on through Sunday.
During this time, parents are also able to attend several events, like Dessert with Dean Blaine Eckles, a reception and welcome to the University.
All new, full-time undergraduates are required to attend the orientation, and they must pay a $100 non-fundable fee, which is automatically charge to each students’ accounts.
