The ASUI Senate filled two vacant seats Wednesday after University of Idaho students Savannah Cardon and Hannah Spear were voted in unanimously.
“I was driven to be a senator because I want to make a difference and I want to be able to speak out for the student body to make a change on issues that need improvement,” Cardon said.
Spear said she also wanted to implement change and was driven to apply to become further involved on campus.
“ASUI was the perfect opportunity to reach out and get more connected to other campus organizations,” Spear said.
Cardon said she hopes to make several improvements on campus, but mostly she would like to draw student attention to the services offered by the Counseling and Testing Center to increase awareness of that support, as well as work to improve the center as a whole.
Spear said she is interested in working directly with clubs on campus to help increase involvement by making students more knowledgeable about the opportunities available to them.
The new senators said they were both involved with sororities at UI and have elected positions within their respective houses.
Cardon also works for The Argonaut and Blot Magazine.
Cardon and Spear said they are excited to serve within their new positions and look forward to the time they have in ASUI and hope to accomplish as much as possible for the benefit of the student body.
Cardon will serve the senate for the duration of the spring semester, whereas Spear’s term will continue into the fall.
“It’s great to have a full body of senators once again,” said Kelsy Briggs, ASUI vice president.
The senate was previously down two members after the resignations of Rory Butcher and Lindsey LaPrath.
Members of ASUI congratulated the new senators and encouraged them to reach out if they needed anything.
Sen. Jordan Kizer said he implored Cardon and Spear to ask questions, to speak their minds and to “jump in with both feet.”
“We are all a resource and have stood exactly where you stand now, so don’t hesitate to come to anyone of us,” Sen. Briggs Jackson said.
