The University of Idaho announced Wednesday that it would grant the release of Vandal quarterback Kareem Coles from the football program.
Coles, a freshman from Madison High School in San Diego, was listed as the fourth-string quarterback on the Vandals roster.
Coles had initially committed to Utah State as a high school recruit, despite offers from UNLV and several FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) programs in the Big Sky Conference. He eventually rescinded the commitment and made the decision to attend Idaho after leading Madison High School to a state championship during his senior season.
Because of Coles’ position on the depth chart behind sophomore Matt Linehan and freshman Jake Luton, Idaho head coach Paul Petrino chose to give the recruit an opportunity at wide receiver.
Despite the dual-position threat of Coles, the freshman saw limited time on the field for Idaho. Coles played in six games for the Vandals, catching three passes for 19 yards and attempting a pass against Auburn during the team’s matchup in November.
As a result of the University of Idaho’s decision to grant his release, Coles will be allowed to freely communicate with other programs and coaches that have an interest in recruiting him.
If Coles is to transfer to another Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program, he will be forced to sit out for a year to comply with NCAA regulations.
If Coles decides instead to transfer to a FCS program, he will be allowed to play due to the change in divisions if he meets academic requirements.
Idaho finished the year with a 4-8 record, the best for the program since the 2010 season.
