Football: Staff predictions, Idaho vs. New Mexico State

With Dezmon Epps out, one of the Idaho receivers is going to step up and have a big night. After two straight wins, the Vandals’ confidence has to be higher than it has been in the last few years. The Vandal offense will do enough and the Idaho defense will continue to improve and shut down the Aggie offense.

Idaho has a great chance to advance to a 4-4 overall record this weekend. The 0-7 New Mexico State Aggies are in last place in the Sun Belt Conference. Even without wide receiver Dezmon Epps for the remainder of the season, the Vandals will play a complete game Saturday. Wide receiver and tight end Deon Watson will have many balls thrown his way and defensive end Quinton Bradley will have two sacks.

New Mexico State lost to Troy and Idaho beat Troy so there is no reason the Vandals can’t snag a win over the Aggies. The Aggies are 0-7 and the Vandals are on a roll. Defensively, Idaho improved its game and that has helped the Vandals tremendously. If the Vandals keep that up and Penny keeps running hard, Idaho will blow New Mexico State out of the water.

Despite losing Dezmon Epps, the Vandals’ odds are good for their upcoming game against New Mexico State. Their 3-4 record looks much better than the Aggies’ 0-7 record. With Elijhaa Penny’s hard-running style, Matt Linehan’s successful passing attack and Quinton Bradley’s ability to get in the opponent’s backfield, the Vandals appear to be in good shape to earn their fourth win of the season.

Idaho travels this weekend to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to face the winless New Mexico State Aggies, who were blown out by Troy Saturday 52-7. The Vandals have established a dominating running game as senior Elijhaa Penny rushed for 184 yards against Louisiana-Monroe on Homecoming Weekend. Fans should expect the Vandals to control the pace of the game with their rushing attack and emerge with their third straight Sun Belt victory.

The Aggies’ homefield advantage won’t be able to stop the Idaho defense. The game could come down to a field goal from Austin Rehkow in the final minutes. It’s going to be a close matchup but the Vandals will keep the winning streak alive.

This game should be winnable for Idaho. Matt Linehan had a solid presence last week against Louisiana-Monroe and it will continue Saturday on the road. If he stays consistent in all four quarters, there’s no stopping him. Following its best game of the season, Idaho’s defense will be a group to keep an eye on going into the game. If the Vandal defense plays as a team, then the results will be in the Vandals’ favor.
