Idaho women”s golf coach Lisa Johnson found some gems in the freshmen class this season.
Freshman Michelle Kim of Surrey, British Columbia, is tied for fourth after two rounds at the Washington State Cougar Cup Monday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman.
Kim fired a 1-under-par 143, which is five strokes off leader Cherokee Kim from Washington State.
Idaho freshman Sophie Hausmann of Nottuln, Germany, is tied for 11th after shooting a 3-over-par 147.
The third and final round concludes Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
“It”s extremely impressive,” Johnson said of the freshmen. “It”s not surprising at all because they”re both highly accomplished players that had great summers coming into this year and so we”ll continue to look to them to help lead our team moving forward.”
The Vandals sit in third place as a team after shooting an 11-over-par 587. They are six strokes back of leader Washington State.
Palouse Ridge is Washington State”s home golf course and Idaho also practices at Palouse Ridge and the University of Idaho Golf Course.
Idaho senior Kristin Strankman is right behind Hausmann after posting a 4-over-par 148. She is tied for 14th.
Senior Cassie McKinley shot a 5-over-par 149 and is tied for 17th and junior Amy Hasenoehrl shot a 9-over-par 153 and is tied for 35th to round out the starters for the Vandals.
“(I”m) extremely impressed with the rest of the team however because all of them have improved their games as well over the summer,” Johnson said. “As we continue to play more tournaments and gel as a team we”re going to do some great things with this squad.”
