Tough start to men’s tennis season, lost to Gonzaga
The spring tennis season didn’t start off quite right for the Idaho men’s tennis team.
The Vandals lost to the Gonzaga Bulldogs Saturday in Spokane, after starting the day with wins in doubles.
Idaho started off well in doubles play against Gonzaga, and won two of the three matches. Freshmen Rhys Richardson and Filipe Fonseca won the first match (No. 3 doubles) for the Vandals against Vladimir Mijatovic and Joey Brandt of Gonzaga 6-3. In the second match (No. 2 doubles), the Bulldogs duo of Nick Kamisar and Alvaro Nazal defeated junior Odon Barta and freshman Mark Kovacs.
The last doubles match (No. 1 doubles) came down to the wire, as Idaho’s doubles team of senior Cristobal Ramos Salazar and junior Jackson Varney edged GU’s Sergio Chip and Hayden Smith to take the win. Idaho won the doubles matches 2-1.
Singles was a completely different story for the Vandals, as Kovacs was the only Vandal to win his match. Kovacs took on Chip in the No. 5 singles match, where he won two very close sets. Barta lost the No. 1 singles to Nazal, Varney lost the No. 2 singles to Kamisar and Fonseca was downed by Smith in the No. 3 singles match.
Idaho will take on Portland State Jan. 30 and compete against Lewis and Clark College the following day. Both games take place in Portland. The Vandals do not host matches in Moscow until April 11, when they play Montana and North Dakota.
