Led by Connor Hill’s 31 points, the Idaho men’s basketball team won their first exhibition game of the 2014 season over Simon Fraser by the final score of 139-115.
The game saw six different lead changes and on eight different occasions, the Vandals and the Clan were tied.
The Vandals have one more scrimmage next Friday against Lewis-Clark State before opening the regular season Nov. 14 against Eastern Oregon.
Along with Hill, senior point guard Mike Scott really shined in a game that turned into a track meet early on. He finished the game with 12 points and 12 assists — and with the flow of the game, he was able to put his athleticism on display for the Vandal faithful in attendance.
Idaho got an unexpected spark off the bench from red shirt freshmen and former walk-on Chad Sherwood. He scored 22 points, 18 of which came from long-range. Him and Hill hit 15 of the 17 three-point field goals for the Vandals.
Idaho coach Don Verlin was pleased with the play of Sherwood and fellow freshmen Jordan Scott and Victor Sanders off the bench.
Sophomore guard Sekou Wiggs, and former CollegeHoopsDaily.com’s WAC Sixth-Man of the Year, looks to have improved on his free throw shooting over the offseason. He finished the night 13-of-16 from the line. He shot a mere 65.8 percent last season. He also shot 5-of-8 from the field and finished with 23 points.
