The Vandals were shutout Sunday for the third consecutive game this season, as they suffered their fourth loss of the season to Gonzaga.
Gonzaga’s Karley Baggerley, sister of Idaho’s Olivia Baggerly, struck first in the 20th minute as she caught the Vandal defense and goal keeper Kimberly Gerken out of position.
Gerken got the start in net after she relieved Torrell Stewart late in Friday night’s loss to Eastern Washington. She yielded a second goal to Baggerly in the 56th minute before Idaho coach Derek Pittman made the switch back to the incumbent Stewart.
Gerken and Stewart combined for seven saves on the day, four by Stewart. Pittman said both Stewart and Gerken will be competing in practice this week for the starting job.
In the 68th minute, Gonzaga’s Brottany Doan all but ended the game as she fired a hard shot past Stewart from 20 yards out.
Savanah Van Citters and Cassie Gerrdts added insurance goals in the 81st and 83rd minutes, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga outshot Idaho 26-2, and 12-0 on goal. Mikayla Anderson led all players with four shots, Elexis Schlossarek and Josilyn Daggs took the two shots for Idaho.
Idaho (0-4) will look to end its losing streak on Friday when it host Boise State. Gonzaga (4-1) travels to face Cal State Northridge.
