Idaho unveiled its brand new video board Friday, dwarfing the junior varsity jumbotron that fans had gotten accustomed to. Still no Cowboys Stadium, despite a humorous comparison from coach Petrino.
There’s a few things that Idaho misses out on being an Independent football team this season. Conference championship games, automatic bowl berths and conference media days. Well, not exactly. The conference championship games and auto bids will have to wait until next season, but the media was fortunate enough to get treated to an exclusive “Idaho Media Day” Friday afternoon in the Kibbie Dome, following the team’s mock game.
The game, which concluded fall camp, featured much of what we’ve seen this fall. Pinpoint accuracy from quarterback Chad Chalich, lightning-quick speed from freshman tailback Richard Montgomery and a coaching staff that flew around almost as fast as wide receiver Dezmon Epps. Also featured, the brand new jumbotron that has been the buzz of the Kibbie Dome this summer.
Chalich has all but secured the starting role, though Petrino won’t announce his No. 1 quarterback ahead of the season opener.
“Anyone that’s around, anyone that’s watched practice kind of knows what’s going on. I just don’t need to tell North Texas,” Petrino said.
After completing 19 of his 20 pass attempts in the team’s last scrimmage, Chalich was 17-of-20 during Friday’s mock game.
As for Montgomery, the Florida product has all but snapped up the starting running back spot and Petrino is keen on his playmaker starting on special teams as a kick returner. To read more about Montgomery, see this article published in Friday’s Argonaut.
