Justin Veltung signs with Seahawks

Former Vandals Korey Toomer and Benson Mayowa will have more silver-and-gold company in Seattle.

Per a league personnel notice it’s been revealed the Seahawks have signed former Idaho WR Justin Veltung. Veltung, from nearby Puyallup, Wash., participated at the Seahawks rookie try-out camp the weekend of May 11. Mayowa was signed immediately after the mini-camp, but it appears patience has paid off for Veltung as his offer has just recently come in.

The Seahawks have a very crowded wide receiver situation, but it could be what Seattle likes is Veltung’s versatility in the special teams game.

“He’s a smart guy,” Seahawks receivers coach Kippy Brown said following the rookie mini-camps. “He knows what to do. He doesn’t make very many mistakes, and so far he’s been real reliable catching the football.”

Injuries slowed Veltung during his final two seasons at Idaho so it wasn’t eye-popping production which caught the eye of Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, but instead the athleticism that showed on the field for Idaho when he was healthy.

Veltung is the fourth Vandal to land a contract as an undrafted free agent, along with Mayowa, punter Bobby Cowan in Oakland and safety Gary Walker in Baltimore. Cowan, however, has since been cut from Oakland.
