Friday links — Petrino’s first class, WBB rolling and more

Happy Friday everybody. It’s been a busy week for Idaho and a busy week for us at The Argonaut to cover it all.

First, some outside links.

– The Western Athletic Conference added its ninth member yesterday, adding Missouri-Kansas City from the Summit league. Curiously enough the Summit is the league Denver will be joining next season. This will keep the WAC at the NCAA mandated eight members, keeping in mind that Grand Canyon won’t be a full Division I program.

– A very heartfelt story from the Seattle Times on new Idaho tight end Kevin Shelton who dealt with the adversity of losing his older brother during his senior year of high school. His other older brother, Danny, plays defensive tackle at Washington.

On to our coverage throughout the week

Football

– Here’s our wrap on Idaho football’s first signing day under new coach Paul Petrino. Petrino inked 28 new players, including 11 junior college players and three quarterbacks. Up to five players are expected to sign on June 1 as gray shirts. Yes, we have video!

Basketball

– Idaho snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, once again, against New Mexico State. This time a late turnover allowed Daniel Mullings to sink the Vandals.

– The women of the hardwood are rolling right now, having won seven of the last nine after Idaho’s 72-53 triumph over New Mexico State last night.

The women sit at third in the WAC, two games out of first, but Utah State holds the tie-breaker having swept the Vandals. Idaho is a game behind Seattle for second, and play Seattle at the Key Arena to finish the regular season.

Other sports

– Idaho’s most successful athletic program at the moment, track and field, is headed to Seattle this weekend for the Husky Classic

– Idaho coach Pete Showler signed his biggest recruiting class as head gaffer at Idaho

The Vandals were sunk by their cross-Palouse rivals in the border war last Friday
