ASUI Vandal Entertainment sponsored its first event of the spring semester Thursday, hosting K-Von, a comedian, and two local students who performed in the Student Union Building ballroom.
K-Von is an up and coming comedian who pokes fun at himself and his experiences growing up with a Middle-Eastern father and a Middle-American mother.
Sammi Gunning, the lectures and performing arts chair for ASUI Vandal Entertainment, said she first saw K-Von perform at an entertainment conference in Portland.
Gunning said ASUI wanted to bring K-Von to Moscow because everyone who saw him really enjoyed his comedy.
K-Von makes regular appearances on MTV’s show “Disaster Date,” in which a contestant is set up on a blind date that he turns into a disaster. He also was a lead actor in the movie, “Gingerbread Man 2: Passion of the Crust.”
K-Von said his advice to those interested in persuing a comedy career is to not wait.
“Don’t wait to move to Hollywood to get your ‘start,'” he said. “Jump up on any stage at any time for any amount of pay. Start with short three, five and seven minute sets and learn how to tell your personal story and get a laugh out of it in front of people no matter how big or small the crowd is.”
Miles Hendrix, a UI student, and Neeraj Srinivasan, a Washington State University student, opened for K-Von. They both are part of Comedy Lab, a UI student group that performs around Moscow and Pullman.
Hendrix said he started doing stand-up comedy in October 2011.
He said he knew K-Von would put on an entertaining show and he was excited for Comedy Lab to open for him.
Gunning said Vandal Entertainment has two lecturers scheduled this semester. Zach Wahls, a son of a lesbian couple who became popular from the viral video “Zach Wahls Speaks about Family.” Katy Wirsing, a poetry slam artist, will also come to UI.
