Transit center opening just in time for holidays

Moscow Valley Transit and University of Idaho Parking and Transportation Services will have to wait another week from their scheduled Dec. 3 opening before they are ready move in at the Moscow Intermodal Transit Center.

The ITC is on the corner of Railroad Street and Sweet Avenue and is expected to be open and running on Dec. 10, but a grand opening will be held Dec. 14.

Susan Couch, public relations officer for the UI Parking and Transportation Services Department, said they had to finish a few things to make the center ready for use, and that is why the opening was postponed.

Most of the cost of the ITC was funded by a $1.5 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Moscow started using fixed service routes in 2004. Since 2004, there has been an average annual increase in ridership of 20 percent, and 70 percent of the patrons are students, according to the UI website.

JR Van Tassel, the Director of Moscow Valley Transit, said the ITC is good for the university and Moscow Valley Transit because all of the resources that the city and Moscow have will all be in the same location.

“It will provide us some economy,” Tassel said.

Moscow Valley Transit will also be working as the agent in ticket sales of Northwestern Trailways.

Beginning Dec. 10, Northwestern Trailways will no longer be using the Royal Motor Inn as its pick up and drop off location, but instead will use the ITC.

Tickets for Northwestern Trailways can be bought at the ITC, or they can be found online at Northwesterntrailways.com.
