Hopefully, your Christmas will be filled with sugar cookies, eggnog and holiday decorations. But in the downtime of the festivities, TV stations broadcast a various array of Christmas themed TV shows and movies. So in your free time, curl up and enjoy my top selections of Christmas themed TV episodes and movies to enjoy during break.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
In my opinion, this is the best Christmas movie ever made. This heartwarming movie follows the life of George Bailey, a businessman. Bailey eventually falls on rough times and it takes a guardian angel to show him what would have happened if he had never existed. Plus, George Bailey fulfills most girls’ dreams of having a man who will lasso the moon in order to appease the woman he loves.
The Big Bang Theory: The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis (Season 2, Episode 11 2008)
Watching Sheldon and the other geeky guys of the Big Bang Theory are entertaining in every episode. But since I grew up in a family of computer scientists, I have always felt a special connection to the show. I love the way in that Sheldon dissects the absurdity of gift giving (in a way that only Sheldon could), and in a way that is realistic and sadly true. But at the end, in an undoubtedly geeky reference to Star Trek, Sheldon overcomes his Grinch-iness and social awkwardness at the same time. It truly must be seen to be believed.
Christmas With the Kranks (2004)
There is something magically appealing about The Three Stooges-esque humor, whether it’s someone entangled in Christmas lights or falling off a roof. This is a wonderful alternative to traditional Christmas movies — daring to rebel against the overwhelming consumerism that seems to characterize Christmas.
A Christmas Carol (1999)
Patrick Stewart has been an excellent starship captain and Shakespearian actor. Stewart’s British accent makes this movie adaptation of Scrooge stand well above the rest.
Doctor Who: The Christmas Invasion (Season 1, Episode 15 2005)
For those who don’t favor heartwarming movies or TV, some action and horror will suffice. Who can forget spinning Christmas trees of death attacking Britain?
