Trying to scrimp and save on groceries this week so you can pre-order Halo 4? Then here’s the dish for you. Makes approximately four large servings.

Ingredients

  • Dried split peas
  • Lemon Juice
  • Salt and Pepper

Optional

  • Sweet potato
  • Bacon
  • Dried or fresh thyme

How to

  1. Put a pound of dried split peas in a pot with four cups of water and bring to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, turn it down to maintain a simmer. Let it simmer for an hour.
  3. When the peas have finally softened up, whisk or blend the soup until it has a relatively uniform consistency.
  4. Add a couple splashes of lemon juice (approximately three tablespoons), salt, and pepper to taste.
  5. If you want to elevate this dish or impress a boy/girl/roommate/parent heat your oven to 425° F and dice a sweet potato into small chunks and chop up about four pieces of bacon.
  6. Put all of this together in a baking pan.
  7. Bake the sweet potato and bacon together for half an hour
  8. Sprinkle a few pieces on top of the soup.
  9. Add a pinch of thyme, dried or fresh work equally well.
