A University of Idaho freshman drowned Saturday while swimming to an island near the Freeman Creek Boat Launch in Dworshak State Park near Orofino.
Detective Mike Deitrick of the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office told the Lewiston Tribune UI freshman Preston W. Vorhauer was between one half to two-thirds of the way across a 150-yard gap in Dworshak Reservoir during a Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity camping trip, when he yelled to some fraternity members that he couldn’t make it and was going to turn back.
Deitrick said two men grabbed him and tried to keep him above water, but were unable to hang on.
Vorhauer’s body was found by the Clearwater County Dive Team after several hours of searching using on-boat sonar around 4 p.m. Saturday.
