Boy scouts host pinewood derby
The Chief Kamiaken Boy Scout District will host its annual pinewood derby at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Eastside Marketplace.
The event is sponsored for the first time by Gilbert Auto Ford in Moscow.
“I used to be a Boy Scout myself, and remembered the pinewood derby,” said Scott Alford, general manager at Gilbert Auto in Moscow. “Since it’s going to be happening right across the street from us I thought it was a good thing.”
The event will take place inside Eastside Marketplace, but a test track is set up on the showroom floor at Gilbert Auto for anyone looking to test their car.
The event is open to Boy Scouts and all members of the Moscow community. Registration for the event ended Thursday.
The $2 registration fee goes to the local Boy Scout chapter. Entrants picked up kits to build their cars for free with the donation of one canned food item that will be sent to the food bank in Moscow.
There will be two divisions at Saturday’s race. A youth division for participants 17 and under, and an adult division for anyone 18 and older.Check-in for the event will begin at 7 p.m. today and 7 a.m. Saturday at Eastside Marketplace. The race starts at 9:30 a.m.
Some friendly competition
Age-old friendly foes take their rivalry to the hardwood Saturday in the University of Idaho Army ROTC’s first annual basketball tournament against its Air Force brethren, Army Cadet Chris Goodale said.
Originally, the Navy branch planned to compete as well but ran into scheduling conflicts.
The game will begin at 5 p.m. in Memorial Gym and anyone is welcome to attend. Each branch has a designated captain who chooses his or her players.
“We’ve been practicing for a couple weeks already,” Goodale said.
In the past, the ROTC branches have competed in football and plan to compete against each other in spring softball as well.
“Friendly competition is a good thing and it’s nice to see everyone’s side of things,” Goodale said.
