The generation gap makes it difficult for students to convey the full spectrum of the college experience to their parents. But University of Idaho events like Dads Weekend are a chance for parents to gain some insight.
This weekend dads will be traveling from all around the U.S. to visit their children at UI, and the university is sponsoring a variety of events for entertainment.
The Iron Dad Challenge, beer tasting at the Coeur d’Alene Brewing Co. Alehouse and the Student Alumni Relations Board Tradition Keeper Challenge are a few options students and their fathers can choose from. Saturday is also time to “Black Out the Dome,” and tailgating before watching the Vandals play Fresno State is probably going to be the most popular weekend festivity.
But students should remember Dads Weekend isn’t just about partying at UI with your father.
College is often referred to as the “best” years of your life. As cliché as this saying is, many parents agree that it’s true. Dads Weekend is an opportunity to give your parents a glimpse into your life. To show them where you live, where you attend classes and to introduce them to the friends who have made a difference in your life.
Maybe your dad was a Vandal and he can share memories of when he was a student at UI. Or maybe your dad didn’t go to college and Dads Weekend is his first time visiting a university. Either way, Dads Weekend is a chance to immerse your parents in the college experience and show them why you love UI.
If your dad wasn’t able to make it up this weekend, remember there are still opportunities for fun, and chances are you’re not alone. Grab some friends and go to the block party hosted by the Prichard Art Gallery Friday, and remember to support the Vandals in the Kibbie Dome Saturday.
Ordinary every day details can’t be shared over the phone so give your dad the real deal.
